03/2006 Leap of Faith

“Great deeds are usually wrought at great risks.” – Herodotus

We’re going on the biggest adventure of our life so far – we’re moving to California without the security of a job.

We’re staying with friends and relatives who are willing to adopt us for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, maybe even a couple of months until we find a job and settle in our own place.

This decision gave birth to many questions and what-ifs from well-meaning family and friends who constantly remind us that we are taking a big risk, especially with our homecoming plans at the end of the year which will definitely cost money.

“What if you don’t get a job right away?"
What if we do find a job right away, the job that was meant for us to showcase God’s glory?

"How will you pay for your expenses?"
What if God gives us means to cover our expenses in ways other than a job?

“What if you get sick?”
What if we don’t?

Despite these concerns, we remain confident that now is the best time to make this huge leap.

Maybe it’s because of the calls we get from prospective employers. Maybe it’s because we know we’re young, we’re able, we’re competent, we can do anything. Maybe it’s because we know we have God with us, and this strong faith allowed us to completely let go of control of our future to God.

Whatever it is, we’re at peace with this decision. And that in itself is the greatest sign from God telling us we’re doing the right thing.

We’ll be nomads for a while, looking for a job, trying out things we’d probably never thought of doing. I want to try working for an airline. Or maybe swim and train dolphins and whales or feed penguins. Or maybe perform on stage. Or maybe put up our own small business.

"What if you’re making a huge mistake?"
What if we’re not?

There are endless opportunities for us right now. But if we stay here and play safe, we’ll never know what they are.

And by the way, we’re moving by land.

We’re going on a 5-day cross-country road-trip from our New York apartment to my dear friend Rosie’s place in Hollister, CA. We’ll pass by 11 states, over 15 sites and roadtrip highlights, and maybe some family and friends along the way.

Beginning April 20, our prospective move date, our lives are drastically going to change.

“The person who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore.” – Dale Carnegie
