Practice Muna

Before our scheduled move/road trip to California from New York, Nino and I had a couple of dry-runs or previews of our anticipated 5-day trip.

Swanton, Maryland – 7 hours, one way
Long and winding roads in Swanton, MDThis was the perfect road trip practice. We were invited by my good friend from Gasso, Kris, to join them for their twin boys’ 1st birthday celebration, and since we haven’t seen each other since we both got here, it was a chance to meet up that we couldn’t miss.

We treated this as if it was THE road trip. OA nga ang preparations namin. We bought a cooler, filled it up with ice, bottled water, bottled Starbucks Fraps, chocolates and brought lots of junk food. We didn’t need any CDs (also because we didn’t have a lot) so we relied on the car radio. It was interesting to observe how many stations aired in one particular area, and what kind of music was often played. We didn’t need to play a CD even once.

Two stopovers lang, one way – for Country Roadgas and food. We saw Horses! Cows! Fields! Land, land, land!!! These were stuff we don’t get to see everyday, not even once a month. Aliw talaga.

By the time we arrived home, 70% of our car food remained untouched and 1 full bag of peanut M&M’s had to go straight to the trash (the bag had a hole and melted ice water just seeped into it), to Nino’s dismay.

Washington, DC - 4 hours, one way

Subway ito! So immaculately clean. This was work-related – Nino was sent to DC for a week for some assignment. Of course I refused to be left behind in an almost empty apartment! So we drove to DC, stayed in a hotel and explored the city (or whatever was left to be explored at 5:30 in the afternoon because the city shuts down at 6:30!). Washington DC was so clean – even the subways didn’t look anything like the NYC subways.

Anyway, there was not much preparation this time, except for a cooler, 2 laptops, 2 suitcases and Nino’s suit (the bellman had a funny look on his face when he saw our stuff – we were only staying for 4 days!)

So far, both trips went swimmingly. I guess that means we’re good to go for the actual 3000-mile road trip. We’re actually getting the hang of this.
